A very exciting topic indeed for Aug. Car extended warranties, worth it or not?
What to look for:
- Buy from the source. Dealers sell to make profit, so theirs may be a resale of another company’s product.
- Be very careful to ensure the breakdown clause includes wear and tear as a failure. Aka if a part fails to perform its intended function regardless of cause of failure, it’s covered (short of abuse of course?
- Make sure the company is well funded and insured. Check out their Claims Reserve Account.
- Make sure you understand when the warranty goes into affect and the cost impact if you wait until the factory warranty expires.
- Re-insurance should have an A rating on AM Best.
- Make sure the deductible is not for each part to be repaired. You want one for each visit regardless of parts to be repaired.
- A 100% money back guarantee for 30-60 days without a claim.
- Transferable warranty
- Avoid clauses such as “Does not cover overheating regardless of cause”
- Look for benefits such as tow, rental car, travel reimbursement.
- Repairs can be done at any ASE repair facility, not their shop of choice
- Warranty pays the shop direct, a big issue to watch this one
There are many levels of coverage from deluxe to basic. Several companies that seem to surface as winners every time I go to the web are Warranty Direct and Nation Warranty Corp. Your insurance company may have a plan as well.
Could not find any specific data which shows average cost of ownership after the factory warranty expires. So I guess it’s really a piece of mind if you buy one. For a GM warranty for your Vette, I found Fichtner Chevy to be the best deal going,
